monster (informal showing today!)

September 17, 2016

I started this piece last year, looking for another work with music.

We did many different versions so far. But recently, I am thinking a lot about what my works do to the society. As you know, nowhere is safe anymore and what is the point being an artist, making dance?

Meanwhile, I was trying different images on this works including costume, movements. And one day, started projection on costume- anime images, flag, different youtube visuals. And when we used the flag, I had a conversation with dancers, and it was more fruitful and constructive that I thought. There are a lot of things that I do not know in US history and society today. But as one of the people who live in  NY, I would like to start the dialogue, as an artist.

Actually, this dance has nothing to do with the image of flag. But surprisingly, so many things have started to have meaning with the flag.

I felt some, or many of New Yorkers do not have a good impression about US flag. But I as an immigrant, I still think the flag is a strong image- and it is a symbol of making US. US is a nation of immigrant- I strongly feel this because Japan is almost mono-racial nation. I often google my friends’ last names- just curious what are their background. And people in US are from all around the world. And how did it happen? How was it possible?

Still people come to US with American Dreams. Even if a lot of people do not agree with this anymore.

And US flag is always there. It is a symbol of unite-

Through this piece, I am not trying to address any political opinion. But I also think, as someone said, nothing is non-political. Dance is as well. But I did not focus on the political aspects before. Now I am very curious.
